Of Our Lady of Africa

Photo of the Basilica Our Lady of Africa in Algiers where is this Statue.
Statue of Our Lady of Africa installed by Mgr Lavigerie (1873) in the basilica of this name in Algiers. - Mgr Pavy, the predecessor of Mgr Lavigerie on the seat of Algiers, had made this construction in honour of the Holy Virgin a "temporary chapel." Before the influx always increasing of the pilgrims, he took the resolution to raise a big sanctuary. The big work was finished in 1866, but a lot remained to make. Mgr Lavigerie put all his heart there and "Our Lady of Africa" was dedicated by him in 1872. Some years later Pio IX (l876),Pie granted the title of" basilica" for this church.

—THE PEDESTAL AND THE STATUE
Penetrating in the sanctuary, the pilgrim has the look immediately attracted by the vivid pedestal on which throne in majesty the Virgin Marie, Mother of Jesus, structural its crown of gold and its rich garment made of blue velvet to furniture vermeil in Medjoub style of the shops of Tlemcen. An elegant Arabian style canopy put on four standoffs spreads a canopy that covers the majesty of the Immaculate Virgin. It ends by a golden and worked "lanternon", surrounded with one baluster to the angles composed by leaves of stylized cactus and gangways at right angles.
The statue of bronze is a faraway retort of the" Virgo Fidelis" of Mgr of Quelen. It was offered in 1840 to Mgr Dupuch, first bishop of Algiers, by the girls of the boarding school of the Sacred Heart of Lyons.
The pedestal, built in 1970 by M. Jean, is a big trained oblong cube and decorated with glazed tiles. It carries its center like "emblema " a magnificent vase of flowers that surrounds the door of the tabernacle, worked work in the copper. The decor made of ceramics was achieved by a Moslem artist in the shape of Mihrab. It brings to the choir a delicate oriental note in contrast with the architecture and the fresco. It expresses an effort generous of the cultures toward the union of all believers around Marie, Mother of Jesus: effort that the invocation perfectly translates
"OUR LADY OF AFRICA, PRAY FOR US AND FOR THE MUSULMANS ".
